Marine

SSC Laser Cutting provides the perfect solution for our customers that operate within the Marine industry, with years of experience producing a range of components that are used at sea. We are specialists in using corrosion resistant, high grade stainless steel such as Super Duplex – this type of material has been developed to withstand highly aggressive conditions like sea water. We’ve done quite a bit of laser cutting for the marine industry over the years, producing a range of components to be used at sea.

Marine projects SSC Laser have worked on

Our laser cutting services have allowed us to produce and manufacture marine buoys, components such as structure frames, antennas and ballast chains. More recently, we have been working on some exciting projects which have seen us manufacture components for remote marine technology that can remove the danger of certain situations. For these marine components, we used Aluminium 5083 as the preferred metal.

We have been in the fortunate position to manufacture and supply components to Luxury Superyacht brand Sunseeker – who developed and perfected their product offering, from the standard boats to racing boats, to the more extravagant superyachts. Sunseeker luxury superyachts required us to produce components such as name plates, anchor covers and stainless steel brackets – enabling Sunseeker to focus on the demanding task of hand finishing their luxury boats.

The benefits of Laser Cutting in the Marine Sector

Laser cutting is highly beneficial for the marine industry due to several key advantages that align with the specific needs and challenges of this sector. Here are the main reasons why laser cutting is particularly useful:

  1. Precision and Accuracy: Laser cutting provides exceptional precision, which is crucial for creating intricate and complex shapes required in marine construction. This high level of accuracy ensures that parts fit together perfectly, reducing the need for additional finishing processes and minimizing material wastage.
  2. Material Versatility: Laser cutting can handle a wide range of materials commonly used in the marine industry, including steel, aluminum, and composite materials. This versatility makes it suitable for various components, from hull structures to intricate interior fittings.
  3. Speed and Efficiency: Laser cutting is a fast process, which significantly reduces production times. This speed is particularly beneficial for the marine industry where large sections of ships or boats need to be fabricated quickly to meet tight deadlines.
  4. Quality of Cut: The laser cutting process produces clean, high-quality edges without burrs or roughness, which is essential for the integrity and performance of marine components. This reduces the need for additional machining or finishing work, saving time and costs.
  5. Reduced Heat Affected Zones: Laser cutting generates a very small heat-affected zone compared to traditional cutting methods. This minimizes the risk of material distortion and preserves the structural integrity of the materials, which is vital for the safety and durability of marine vessels.
  6. Automation and Repeatability: Modern laser cutting machines are highly automated and capable of producing identical parts with consistent quality. This repeatability is crucial for the mass production of marine components, ensuring uniformity and reliability across multiple units.
  7. Design Flexibility: The precision of laser cutting allows for greater design flexibility, enabling the creation of complex geometries and customized parts that would be difficult or impossible to achieve with other cutting methods. This is particularly useful for bespoke yacht construction and innovative marine engineering solutions.

Materials used in the Marine Sector

Super Duplex is the primary material we use when making components for the Marine Industry.

However, we do work with other materials that are equipped to deal with the marine environment like, SAE 316 stainless steel – this type of steel is also resistant to corrosion compared to other grades of steel, making it a great contender to produce components suitable for sea life.

Aluminium 5083, is another material we work with. This type of aluminium is renowned for its exceptional performance in extreme conditions and with traces of magnesium, manganese and chromium it is highly resistant to seawater. SSC Laser Cutting always ensures it’s marine grade
